Poperenga July 1st 1864 Dear Sir Observing the success which has recently attended the importation of Salmon roe to the Australian Colonies (at a comparatively small expense) dont you think it would well repay this Province, to vote a sum for their introduction here? as I am quite satisfied that the temperature of this country is far superior to that of Tasmania for that purpose - Having had some experience at home in the habits and propagation of Salmon, I don't think there could possibly be more suitable Rivers for their maturation than those immediately about here, one in particular being in my opinion quite equal to any Salmon river I have seen at home - If you approve of the scheme and could get a sum placed on the estimates for the purpose, Williams and myself would pledge ourselves to Superintend the formation of ponds etc. for their reception as well their future management - I am, Sir Yours truly Jasper L. Herrick Donald McLean Esq. Superintendent, Napier
