December 1868 No. 594/3 Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 8th. inst., covering copy of a communication from Major Westrupp, expressing admiration of the conduct and bearing of the Hawke's Bay Yeomanry Cavalry Volunteers, under Capt. Turner; and am instructed to transmit herewith copy of a letter which has already been addressed by the Defence Minister to the Officer Commanding at Napier, conveying to Captain Tanner the thanks of the Government for zeal and patriotism shewn by him, and the Troops under his command, in so readily responding to your call for aid, and proceeding on service to Poverty Bay.
