Overland Mail left for Wellington. On Dr. Wilson's complaint I called on S. Joll to remove his fencing encroaching on the Devon Road. He promised to do so. Two Ngatiruanui natives called about a Contract written in English, which they had signed without understanding it. The work was abandoned. The cutter "Sarah Berry", Northank, from Kawhia, in ballast. The Trustees of the New Plymouth Savings Bank met at the Police Office. Court Day. Watt v. Robinson; debt; judgement for plaintiff; costs divided. Ibbotson did not appear against Piripi. "Sarah Berry" sailed for Manukau; cargo - 176 tons maize, 3 1/4 tons potatoes, 1 ton flour, five casks butter, 8 cases butter, 1 box eggs. General muster and drill. Rawiri came to Barracks. General muster and drill. Hereta, of the Henui, complained of Dalby's bullock trespassing on his grass, near Pukakaha. Dalby denied the charge, and said the cattle from that Pah frequently annoyed him. Overland Mail from Wellington. I received a packet from you, containing several letters, which were delivered. I saw Paratene about the boundary line at Kaiwaru, separating S. Mathew's land from a Native Reserve, He was satisfied. Overland Mail from Auckland. Force met at Barracks. Heale absent for the day. W. Cowling, Tamati Waka, Warihi, Hiriwanu, and Hapimana, called about some work contracted for by other natives of the Puketapu tribe, six months since, and which they had abandoned; whereupon the above-mentioned stepped in as a relief party, without knowing all they had to perform, which is denied by Cowling - and now claim payment at the rate of £1 per acre, as stated in the Contract with the original contractors. In this instance the fault appears to be with the European. I received two Summonses against J. Bayly and R. Seecombe. Barracks arms cleaned. Johnson and Heale v. Bayly and Seecombe. Case - cattle wandering at large in the town street. Both cases dismissed, owing to the name of the Street not being mentioned in the Summons. An omission of Mr. Standish's general muster and drill. Absent Medland, since the 2nd. inst. The "Shepherdess", Swan, from Wellington; passenger - Father Pezent, a Roman Catholic Priest; general cargo. The cutter, "Katherine Johnstone", Murphy, from Nelson, with three passengers on a trip of pleasure. I received one letter and several Southern papers for you.
