New Plymouth March 2, 1857 My dear Sir, I am unable to forward Native report for February today but will do so by the next mail. I am happy to inform you that many natives hitherto opposed to selling land in this district are now in favor of it and I venture to say that the time is fast approaching for open negotiations. The Ikamoana bounded by Waitaha and Mangoraka is to be offered first by Nikorima and Ihaia Kirikumara to whom it was given by the Ninia natives when they were threatened by Ngatiruanui - according to Maori custom it was a regular gift and as such I imagine the title to be good and hope the claim will be acknowledged at the proper time. This land will be offered with the sanction of Mahau, Arapata, Paora, of Waitara, and other leading men formerly of the opposition. Of course Katatore would not be overlooked in any payment that may be made. This settled, the whole of the country as far North as Ninia the natives tell me and I have it from many influential men will at once follow. There will be some opposition from Wiremu Kingi and possibly Katatore for a time but for want of supporters their opposition must fall to the ground. I am going to see Katatore this morning about this tuku whenua of which he is aware to ascertain his opinion and intentions, in the mean time you may rely upon my utmost caution in this busines. I should be glad if you would again urge upon the Governor the propriety of relieving me from the duties of Interpreter to the Resident Magistrated Court as they greatly interfere with my other duties. Frequently whilst engaged on business of a very opposite nature I am called upon in cases of debt and squabbles between natives and Europeans and have to appear in the R.M.'s Court. I am also obliged to make repeated applications to natives for outstanding debts previously to the issue of a summons when I appear as Interpreter for the European and become associated with him accordingly. Hoping you are well, Believe me, faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
