Christchurch Sept. 16, 1867 My dear McLean, The name of the young man I was mentioning to you as nephew of Commander A. B. Usborne who came out with Governor Fitz Roy to be marine surveyor - is E. B. Cornish, son of a Commander in the Navy. He was in the Navy as paymaster and left in 1864 to better himself in N. Zd. He is at Waikaraka Station East Coast - I fancy it is at a Mr. Moores. The Uncle writes me word that one reason the young man wants to get out of that life is the being obliged to be always in hearing of the disgustingly low and beastly language which is habitual to the hands on a Station, with whom he has to associate. I know nothing of the young man myself; nor would I ask you to do more than is reasonable for the sake a nephew of Usborne who was a very dear friend of our honest upright and conscientious old Governors - on whose account I know you would willingly do anyone a good turn. It will be a kindness first to give the lad a lift up in social position by recognising him whenever he crosses your path, with a greeting and kind word. I dont advise him ever to look to Govt. Service and no boy of mine ever shall go into it - except for a year or two training and discipline, but not for his living, or for his future chances of a competency. My work and industry would have made me a fortune to retire on by this time in private employment; and now at 43 after 23 years service my pay wont keep a family, on the most careful and abstemious living, by 1/3 of what it costs me! Its curious how men do covet Govt. billets out here. I hope you'll bear in mind what I said about securing by Law the colony against the Bank which holds its Revenues.
