To:- D. McLean Wellington. Sept. 18th. 1868. Wairoa report per Orderly last night --- Deighton says scouts have returned. Report having found three bodies and buried one (Condon's). The other two in a water-hole, and could only be recognised by a few rags as human remains, and scouts left them as they found them. Ex-prisoners short of food, and talk of coming down towards Wairoa for supplies. Koti threatens to cut up any scouts venturing near him again. Te Rakiroa was seen inside the pass which is in earth work on all sides but one, and that is of palisades. (Signed) Joseph Rhodes.
