Turanga 11 March 1867 D. McLean, Esq., My dear Sir, I avail myself of the natives going to attend the Wairoa runanga to write you on our Turanga matters. Capt. Biggs is doing all he can he is most energetic. I do not think you could have a better person to carry out the intentions of Govt. on this coast. Nevertheless it is to be deplored the length of time that was elapsed before the Govt. gave the natives any sign of their determination. This I fear coupled with the injudicious proceedings of certain parties (at the head of whom I want to name Superintendent) here has rendered a quiet solution of the confiscation scheme, far more difficult than it otherwise would have been. I believe our friends (?) Lazarous, Wi Pere and Hirine te Kariae, will (with their supporters) give more trouble than the rest of our natives, there is every intention on their part as well as others to ignore the right of the Hauhaus to any (or at least a very insignificant portion) of the lands in Turanga, however it is well known those in rebellion owned the larger portion by far and nearly all the inland country from Patutahi and Waerengaahika. I do hope matters will soon be placed on a proper footing the sooner the better for both races. I deeply regret you were not allowed to carry out these arrangements which had they have been completed six months since would have saved much trouble and heart burnings. The Natives depended on you, it was quite futile to thwart your views through the ministrations of Messrs. Rice and Co. Drop me a line if you have time and inclination and believe me ever my dear Sir, Very faithfully, J. W. Harris.
