Wellington, Feb. 24th, 74. Sir, You will kindly accept the accompanying little book, mayhap it may assist in doing that which I am most anxious to have done - to be remembered by you. My work at Burrett's is nine hours daily during five days of the week, and on Saturday my labour extends over eleven consecutive hours, and this in active and physically exhausting toil. If I could get employment that would give me more leisure I think that I could give a good account of my spare time at present, I find literary work almost impossible in the few moments I can snatch from needful rest. I have begun a history of our conflict in New Zealand with the Maori from the earliest to the latest date in which the British soldier and the colonist were brought face to face with each other. I hope to do this without a political bias toward either side. I have been gathering material for this for the last 12 or 14 years - but my circumstances have always hitherto prevented me from getting my knowledge into narrative form. I will do it I do hope some day. You will kindly pardon this intrusion on your time and patience. Your most obt. svt. Geo. H. Wilson. The Honble D. McLean, Native Minister.
