Auckland 26 April 1865 My Dear Sir I received your communication dated 12 Inst. respecting Military Settlers. I regret that in such a matter I could not render you any assistance as I am convinced we require every man in this Province it appears to me that in taking Military Settlers from this Province to another Province in the Northern Island, is like cutting a piece of cord from one end and tiing it on to the other and, I think the best way in an emergency like this would be to obtain Military Settlers from the Middle Island. This Province has paid the passage of a large number of Immigrants and will I think only be fair that your Province should bear that expence although in the meantime the Gen. Govt. is advancing the money it will ultimately be paid by this Province of Auckland. I am in great haste Yours faithfully Robert Graham
