The Parsonage Saturday 1860 My dear McLean - You have been quite misinformed I never made any such statement as that you affirmed the land to belong to W. Kingi. Only a little while before your arrival I had been informed by the Bp. of Wellington - that you had not been consulted on the Waitara question, and that you did not know the circumstances of the case - so that it was impossible that I could have made any such assertion Miss Hunter in writing to Mrs. Govett mentioned that you were reported to have expressed your opinion that the Governor was mistaken in the course he had adopted. Possibly she may have spoken of this rumour - to some persons here - and hence I have been supposed to have made the speech attributed to me about you - Hoping that this explanation will prove satisfactory to you - I remain, Yours very truly Henry Govett
