My reason for not going to Napier. I heard that Mr. McLean was coming up - Have visited all the Hau Hau settlements in this District but nothing of importance to communicate, excepting that at the Whakahi the nativesappeared extremely anxious to obtain which I subsequently found out they intended sending to Tauranga for the purpose of buying powder. All are of the same mind with regard to this District viz., that no act of aggression will be committed by them on the whites providing they are not interfered with first - They distinctly and universally state they will not be governed by British Law and that if Soldiers are sent into any part of this District it will be a signal for them to rise at once.
