Makaraka 16 Febry. 1861 Dear Sir, Finding that matters instead of bettering, are becoming, worse with us I have decided on leaving this district, and trying my fortunes elsewhere. With this view I have already sent Mrs Harris and the little ones to stay at her parents, they having kindly offered to take charge of them until I have chosen upon our future home. Believing that there will be a good field open for me either at the Figees or Queensland, I shall start from here for Auckland; in all probability, about the latter end of April or sometime in May. Since leaving Napier I have renewed my acquaintance with the Carpenters tools, and am therefore amply provided with a good supply. Candidly I have been coining money at that occupation lately. I trust that I shall be so occupied up to the time of my leaving this. I write on this occasion in order that you may give me your advice, in this to me, important step, and in giving that advice pray bear in mind that I am determined to earn my living in any honest way. Since I have been here instead of extricating myself from my difficulties I have become plunged more deeply, and it is with the firm hope of extricating myself from the same that I go elsewhere. It would appear to me that the Figees possess many advantages to one situated as I am - european labour being so much in demand, one could not readily be placed in a situation of pecuniary distress. I merely mention the Figees especially as it has struck me as opening a good field. I will be very thankful for the advice which I trust you will kindly offer me. I am dear sir, Truly yours Edward F. Harris. Donald McLean Esqre.
