Met Mr. Hough on his way to Waimate, requested me to warn the natives against the foolish tikanga they were adopting. He stayed with me, and with him were a few natives requesting his advice on the subject, which was that he considered the influence they laboured under, a satanic influence, and wrote a strong sarcastic letter to point out how much they were going astray. I also wrote them on the same subject
