Dec. 15th 1868 Napier My dear McLean, The Hauhaus at Turanga do not seem inclined to let Whitmore retire without a brush - I hear that Karaitiana's men are to go to Wairoa tomorrow - Is this move of yours, or Spontaneous, or suggested from Turanga? Wanganui does not seem to have been attacked yet - This slow process on both Coasts will weary us out, and utterly prevent any capital being invested in the Island. I confess I see no end to these Maorie troubles without a standing army or a British force maintained on the frontiers. Yours very truly Joseph Rhodes
