New Plymouth, Saty. 8 Novr., 1856. To the Editor of the Wanganui Chronicle. Sir, Our Council came to its crisis on Tuesday or Wednesday last when its ultimatum for dissolution was given in to the Superintendent. No doubt the Governor will readily accede and new elections of course will soon be on the Henceforth, I apprehend, we shall have less of meddling with and bungling at legislation, and I think that as regards these we may retrospect with painful regret for the thus needless expenditure of both time and money. Various reasons are assigned for this sudden backing out, and no doubt a favourable gloss will be given in the Herald of this morning to account for the prematurity through one or two motives not so favorable to the existence of a good understanding afloat among us. The investigation by a committee of the Council, regarding Mr. McLean's alleged misappropriations here of land to the Maories came to a close on Monday, when our treasuier Mr. Chilman, very untowardly for himself, failed to establish his claim to the few acres of swamp near the Henui; and when, also, all theother allegations against that gentleman were shown us to be erroneous --- in other words, based on the sand of a mean unworthy spirit, but which on every occasion that offers here against him is sure to manifest; yet, eventually, has ever as surely met with disgraceful defeat. My advice to the mischievous clique, who thus so wantonly buzz at him, would be for the future to let their betters alone, and Mr. McLean assuredly musters, in affairs both of mind and utility, toweringly high over them in these capacities, I am, Sir, Your obedt. servt., (Signed) N.
