Mahia Decr. 10th /64 Dear Sir I enclose an account from Campbell for a boat etc. which he has sold to Ihaka, they say that you agreed that Ihaka should have it, Ihaka says that he will pay the money bye and bye, There is a question here as to who the Whales belong to which are driven on shore within the Govt. boundary - Bartlett has driven up about eight or ten head of cattle from Turanga, he asked me if they might be on Govt. land I told him yes, but not to bring any more till some arrangements were made by the Govt. I mention this because I beleive that Mr. Fitzgerald have been cross questioning him as to whether you gave him leave to stop on his land etc. I told Bartlett that his cattle could stop but that I should refer the matter to you so that arrangements might be made for such cases. There is a woman named Hareata Tukuaka, married to Hoani pura living at Petene who owns some land here that would be useful the name of the place is Kaitangikaroro on the boundary of the late purchase, her brother named Hohepa lives here - There is also an old man named Iharaira Timutimu at Waimarama who is also an owner here - I hope to get Wangawehi soon but the Turanga people and a few here amongst others Snipe and his brother are very troublesome. Tangiharere told me last night that the Turanga people have had a plan laid out for long time to ransack Reeds store if things came to the worst they appear to think that there is powder there The Maraetaha people appear to be the most united and the best behaved excepting Ihaka of Whareongaonga but he has no claim there - Campbell has given me a great deal of information with respect to relationships etc. I remain Dear Sir Yours truly S. Locke Donald McLean Esq.
