Copy. Downing Street. 25th. July 1860. Sir, In consequence of the enquiry contained in your letter of 23rd. inst. addressed to Mr. Ashley I have obtained from the War department a further and accurate account of the state of the Force at present or in a short time likely to be avaiblable in New Zealand from which it appears that there is one Regiment the 65 th. now in New Zealand and the 2nd. Battalion of the 14th. Foot is going out to relieve it. The 65th. will be detained untill the disturbances are over. The 65th. Regt. is at present a very strong one, being over 1200 and the 2nd. Battalion of the 14th Foot will be recruited up to the same number so that the two Regts. will nearly be equal to three Weak Regiments. I remain Sir, Yours obedient servant, (signed) C.J. Barrington.
