Kawhia 24th. Octr. 1857. My dear Sir, Accompanying this I forward you a letter wh. I have recd. from Mr. Dixon and Wirimu Hoeta, on the subject of a small patch of ground near the Rangitaiki Mill, wh. the former wishes to buy, and the latter is willing to sell as a little homestead for the person in charge of the Mill. Mr. D. formerly resided close to the mill itself, up the creek, but what with the dam on one hand and the mud holes on the other, the danger to his children of continuing to live there was too great to be persisted in. On two occasions, I believe, he has had to take one of them out of the water. Mr. Dixon is son of the Mr. Dixon Millwright in Auckland, and with an English Wife has resided at Aotea and Kawhia some 5 years nearly. The 2 wooden chapels at the former place were erected by him, and he has now nearly completed another at the Maika here, and I am in hopes will have an order to build one shortly at the Mahoe. So that he is a settler whom it seems very desirable to retain in the district, and especially so on the Natives account since he can keep their mill in working order. At the same time he naturally wishes if possible to to avoid living any longer on Maori sufferance and desires to be located on a small spot of his own where he can build and improve and enjoy the products of his labour, without danger of being ousted and ruined by a Maori landlord. The house wh. he has ready for erection on the site applied for (only seven acres altogether) is worth £150 and is therefore too valuable to risk as unpurchased land. In conclusion of this hasty note, I can assure you that Mr. D. is well worthy of your interference., and that if the place can be purchased for him satisfactorily, it will be for the comfort and benefit of all concerned. Believe me Yours sincerely, H. Hanson Turton.
