Report from 18th. to 31st. of Jan 1852. Jan. 18 Sunday parade. Police on duty in Town during Divine Service. Tamati, a Paraeiti native, and three others came to Barracks this evening and complained of unprovoked abuse and cursing received from Mr. Merritt. I went into Town but did not meet with that individual. 19 Epiha, attached to the Whanganui Police, left for his station. A schooner came up from the North and passed on. Posted usual report to you. Reported to Resident Magistrate yesterdays complaint against Mr. Merritt, he was again reprimanded and orders given to the Police to arrest him on a repetition of the offence. Overland mail left for Wellington. In consequence of a second complaint from Tamati, two Policemen were sent in Town to watch Mr. Merritt. 20 By permission of Resident Magistrate I left Town this afternoon for Tataraimaka and placed Johnson in charge during my absence. 23 Overland mails from Wellington and Auckland received two Gazettes for you. 24 Returned to Town. General muster and drill. Attended at the Police Office. 25 Sunday Parade. Police on duty in Town morning and afternoon 26 Attended at Police Office. Mr. Scotland delivered a lecture on Agriculture. 27 Force engaged cleaning arms and appointments. 29 Te Ngahuru came to Town told Resident Magistrate that Parengi Kingi, of Wairau, refused to allow a road to Tataraimaka unless you abandoned Paora's offer of land at Hauranga - the same native had however since assented to a road from Omata to Oakura on payment of six pounds claimed by him from Mr. Cutfield for looking after and driving back stray cattle from Tataraimaka, otherwise a right of road would not be allowed. 31 General muster - Absent Newsham Honi Ropiha, Rawiri and Tamati Waka. Attended at Police Office. The duties of the Police continue to be attended to and all here is quiet. H. Halse. Sergt. Major. New Plymouth 31 Jan. 1852.
