Napier Sept. 5th 1866 My dear McLean I have the honor to forward you a letter received open, from Major Whitmore this morning - Substantially you have received all the news it contains some 10 days ago - On Monday last I received a long official letter from the Major on the subject, and duly replied; advising that gentleman to have recourse to the ordinary machinery of the law, at least, as a first step - I have some reason to believe that a warrant could be used through Tareha to effect the capture of the ringleaders; but this is too long a subject for this paper - I have no letter from you this mail, but as I hear that the Assembly business will be over towards the end of the month I have called a meeting of our Council for the 25th Sept. (being Tuesday a sitting day) Spring is advancing fast and you and Ormond can leave very well on the 23rd and I will have every thing ready here. Yours very truly Joseph Rhodes His Honor Donald McLean Esq. Wellington
