Wanganui 22nd, May, 1857. Dear McLean, I have just written an official to the Genl. Govt. relative to the present position of my Dept. as Resident Magistrate, you will perceive that it is quite absurd in a small settlement containing about 400 adults that there should be two Counts of Justice within a short distance of each other open every day for the despatch of business. George rees who is hand in glove with Featherstone is the active man, and seems to lead the other Magistrate. You are aware that for the last five years he has always been opposed to my Court but was kept under by Sir. Geo. Grey? I wish you would therefore give the present Govr. a slight hint of his character, you would suppose from his also being an officer of the General Govt. that he would be more cautious in his proceedings. I sent you £20 per last mail from Hori Kingi. Nothing new here. Trafford and Bazelgate are going home. Friend Paul is still at Rangitikei. In haste yours truly, D.S. Durie
