Waiapu November 24th. 1867 My dear McLean, We arrived here on the day after we left you after a pleasant run up the Coast with a sea as smooth as glass having called at Uawa and Anaura to land the Natives and their kai. The Old lady was in high good humour with everything and greatly delighted with the Natives, all being very attentive to her. At Turanga I got a letter from the Govt. conveying instructions that I should without delay proceed to call the Natives together in different parts of the Coast for the purpose of fully explaining to them the nature and purpose of you hill also get them to nominate returning officers one Native and one European in each polling district and determine the polling places. This I have already partially done. We had a large meeting here of all from Makeronia te Tuparoa the week I arrived which proved most satisfactory. I then started for Anaura where as you know there was a large gathering. One and all expressed their gratification and their sense of the benefit meant to be conferred upon them. The Returning officers they nominated for this polling district are Hotene of Tuparoa and they begged that Mr. Spencer might be allowed to act as the other being the only European that they could place reliance on. At Anaura Henare Potae and Mr. Ferris were nominated. It was my intention to go on from Anaura to Turanga out I was far from well and regularly done up so I wrote to Biggs asking him to assist me by ascertaining the nominees for Returning officer here as I should have to proceed northward as soon as possible after my return here. Morgan is going north with me next week, we shall go as far as Raukokore together and he intends going on as far as Maketu or +Opotiki. The polling places I have recommended to the Government are Raukokore, Waiapu, Anaura and Turanga, thus making the distance between each sufficient to prevent as much as possible the chance of double voting. I have written to the Government informing them as far as I have gone and of the favourable effect it is producing on the Natives. Morgan is the Candidate for all this portion of the Coast as far I suppose as Hawke's Bay. There will no doubt be two or three others - I shall let you know as opportunity offers all that goes on till you come which I hope will be soon.
