November 10th. 1856. Auckland. A. McLean Esq., Te Ahuriri. Dear Sir, Having been appointed by His Excellency as one of the Surveyors to the Native Land Purchase Department, I much fear that I shall not be able to meet you at Waipa in the Summer as we purposed, I hear that a large sum of Money has been sent to the Ahuriri for the Natives in payment for the Land. I trust you will get some pickings out of it. I also hear that it is likely that a larger sum of Money is likely to be expended there during the Summer, should that be the case, you will be able to take steps to avail yourself of the information. I hope you have been able to dispose of my Pony, if you have done so, you would oblige me much by forwarding to Mr. D. McLean in Auckland the proceeds, as I am very much astern, my trip with you to the Ahuriri having been rather inopportune. Hoping that you are comfortably settled, I am Dr. Sir, Yours very truly, Will N. Searancke. Write to me at Auckland.
