Taupo, December 14, 68. Sir, I have the hnor to send the following report - On the 12th there was a Meeting of influential chiefs at Omanui, all were present with the exception of Te Heuheu who had started for Rangitikei before receiving the letter calling him to the Meeting. The Meeting formed a Komiti consisting 40 and have determined to resist any hauhau coming to take up their residence at Taupo. It is the opinion of the Natives here that in the event of the rebels being defeated at the settlements on the coast that they will come to live at Taupo. This is also my opinion. In the event of this I do not think that the pakehas will be safe. There is no other demonstration on the part of the Hauhau here but I have no doubt that they will join any, coming either to live at or pass through Taupo. We have a report here that the Hauhau have been beaten at Turanga 150 killed Te Kooti amongst the number. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient Servant, Jno. St. George. His Honor Donald McLean, Esqr., Govt. Agent, etc. Hawkes Bay.
