Hawera 2.11.4. Under Native Secretary. Capn. Wray is coming here tomorrow with Mr. Marchant. The former wants the surveys of land for cession to the Crown to be under the Supervision of his department I consider this an uncalled for interference and if I am to carry on the work I must not be fettered with and distrust or personal jealousies of Surveyors. An early reply will oblige. R. Parris. C.C. Reply to above. G.B. Nov.3, 1874. R. Parris Esqr. C.C. No.175. From your telegram of last evening I apprehend you are under some mistake. I informed you before that all surveys under the control of Hon. Native Minister have been placed under the management of the Inspector of Surveys. All surveys on West Coast are under Mr. Marchant as his Deputy whose appointment has been Gazetted. There are no personal feelings in the matter. Captn. Wray must take his orders from Mr. Marchant and Mr. Marchant must carry out the instructions that he receives from his superior officer. I do not see why the survey arrangements should in any way interfere with your duties. Hy. T. Clarke N.S. Reply to above. Hawera 3.11.74. Under Native Secretary. You are mistaken in supposing there was no personal feeling. Skeet was the mark. Objections were raised to his surveying in the district which annoyed me. I was fully aware the work would be subject to the Surveyor General. R. Parris. C.C. Telegram from self to Mr. Marchant. Nov.3, 1874. J.A. Marchant Esq. No.179. From a telegram I received from Mr. Parris last evening I fear he is under some misapprehension in reference to your duties. I have explained to him as clearly as I can and Hon Major Atkinson has done the same. Do all in your power to avoid a hitch. If you are in any difficulty the Native Minister will deal with it from headquarters. Hy. T. Clarke. N.S. Reply from Mr. Marchant to above. Under Secy. Native Office. Have just arrived to see Mr. Parris at his own request. The telegram to you had no reference whatever to me. Of course he shall have every assistance from me. Will adhere to your instructions. J.W.A. Marchant. Dep. Insp. Surveyor. Note. Novr. 5th. Telegram just received by Hon. Major Atkinson to effect that all difficulties have vanished. Hy. T. Clarke.
