Letter from Lieut. Governor Eyre, to Donald McLean dated 25th. May 1849. Government House 25th. May 1849. My dear Sir, I wrote to you a day or two ago, to tell you that after consulting the New Zealand Company's agent, I was enabled to authorise you to set apart two Reserves for the Government, of 300 or 400 acres, on the line of road leading to Taupo, for the purpose of hereafter locating Friendly natives, if desirable. I now write to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 22nd. May; and to authorise you to employ Mr. Park to lay out a native village at Patiki, making the best arrangement you can with them, for the service. This, as well as the laying off the two Blocks above referred, should be completed before Mr. Park returns to Wellington, so that there may be nothing to delay, or prevent the issue of a Grant to the New Zealand Company. The ferry reserves I before mentioned, I think the Government, under present circumstances, ought not to meddle with; so that you need not set apart any lands for that purpose. With regard to Rangihaeata, I need hardly say that he cannot receive any portion of the Ngatiapa purchase money; nor do I see on what grounds exactly the Government could make him a present just now, however desirable they may think it to do so in a political point of view. But with regard to the Manawatu, I imagine the case will be very different; and that he will be a legitimate claimant. Of course Mr. Park will only act at the expense of the Government, in laying out the native village, not in marking out the Blocks to be reserved for future location of natives.
