Dear McLean, I arrived here on the 5th. inst., the cutter not having been able to sail from Napier before the 3rd., and the survey for the township is nearly completed, expect to finish plans and marking out by the middle of January, also the sounding in one or two places, one here which I think will be of advantage to shipping in fact the place wants to be made known, and that there is safety with care, for this reason I intend to heave on Monday for Long Point (one or two days work) and survey the anchorage known by the name of "Mud hole" surrounding which there is papaa rack which is not fit holding ground for vessels, I will write a report when the work is finished. The purchasing goes on gaily as a Marriage Bell, Lock has written you a long epistle. There is a small piece included an your purchase here on the eastern side, a flat called Oraka, which would do for small settlements I will shew it on a plan. I would be glad to get the work of marking out the 5/- land such as Ormond's etc. which has been applied for, during the Summer months I could make something by it. The Survey at the Wairoa Township can be done better when the Native crops are out, in say April, than sooner, besides which, I must do something else, to make some money during the summer, should I be able to arrange with you to go back to Wairoa I would take other duties, if Mr. Brown does not return I would take his place (acting R.M.) What is to be done with people building at Wairoa (during this present) are they to be allowed rights because they did ask for them? Everyours in haste M. Fitzgerald.
