My dear Rhodes You may read present politics as Middle Island versus the North. Weld distinctly proposes withdrawal of troops and offers no substitute. This is clearly absurd. It will not be carried. I saw Sir George Grey yesterday and had a talk with him on the subject. The present Ministry may be out at any moment, they would have been last night on the question of troops if it had gone to a division. Weld personally is universally respected and has a good following but on such a vital question as withdrawing troops before peace is restored he cannot stand. I am writing to Carter for some accounts those for military roads and surveys will be refunded. The interests of the Province require that I should remain here till the Assembly closes. I met your brother once or twice he is quite well. The papers will give you a full digest of political subjects. Yours faithfully Donald McLean Deer. 1st 64.
