Wellington 29th December 1875 My dear Sir Donald Everything in our offices seems to be going on in order, and I do not know of any work being delayed beyond what may be looked for at such a time as Christmas - I have written Mr. Clarke on one or two matters of business and also send him some papers for action, therefore will not trouble you further on them - I sincerely give you my thanks for your kind telegram last week, however much I should like a quiet week at your station, it must be put off for a matter of private business that requires me at Tauranga, and after Mr. Clarkes return, I look forward to it - Now that the Wellington election is over, I think a great majority of the people agree that the best men have been returned, all feeling has softened down and the matter seems almost forgotten - Astrong feeling exists here that Mr. Reynolds was badly treated at Dunedin, I may almost say that this feeling is universal, it is to be hoped he will turn the tables by being returned for Port Chalmers - Today is the election at the Hutt, but the return of Mr. Fitzherbert should be certain. For the Wellington Country Districts it will be hard work to remove Mr. Brandon, if I may venture an opinion he will be returned, although Gillon has assured me this morning only, that his election will be a certainty - If so his tone wont improve the house although his (page torn-te) would be his interest - Dr. Buller reports his certainty also, he would be a thorn in Mr. Fitzherberts side if returned, but feeling in Wellington is with the sitting member. Gisborne people are very wroth that there is no polling place on the coast between Opotiki and Gisborne. I think it is a mistake, Waiapu and Tolago should have had this privilege. Ormond also is left out, and those residing there compelled to come into Gisborne - The leaving out these places will do Kelly more harm than good - I hope you are in health.
