Memorandum for D. McLean Esq. My house at Wanganui was burned by order of Capt. Lay of the 58th. Regt. on the 20th. May 1847, the district being at the time under Martial Law. The house, with lean-to, contained seven apartments, with garrets above, also kitchen adjoining, small store-house, large cow-shed, and fowl-house, apart from the house, all burned down at the same time. I calcuate the different buildings contained upwards of fourteen thousand feet of timber, the price at the time being fourteen shillings per hundred.
