Wairoa Sept.20th 1866 Sir Since my return to Wairoa from Napier, I have had further opportunities of forming a correct Judgement respecting the views of the Natives generally, on the several questions at issue amongst them at this Juncture -and have been considerably instrumental in preventing further dealings with persons desirous of occupying native Lands in cases which would have added materially to existing complications. I may mention the cases of 'Tamihanas' land on the 'Waiau' which he has been seeking for some time past to let - and which the Messrs Thorpe had agreed to reht from him - I was asked to take a part in the negotiation but declined on the Representation of 'Pihira Kopu', and wrote to Messrs Thorpe to that effect and also recommending that no farther steps
