PAPAKURA

Contributed by “Cymo”

Unit cricket was continued at Papakura Camp last week and two matches were commenced, Canteen, Fire Brigade, H.Q. Mess and P. 0., 148; v. Medical and Dental Corps, 30 for 6 and Motor Transport and Mechanics, 37; v. Canteen, Fire Brigade, H.Q. Mess scoring 106 not out against above matches will be published next week on completion of the second day’s play.

An outstanding performance was the first century on the Ca'mp ground since it was opened Sgt. Smith of H.Q. Mess, scoring 1/6 not out against the Medical and Dental Corps team, showing a preference for the on side anything short of a length was’despatched to the boundary. He hit 12 fours and two sixes. An old Otago cricketer the senior selector would do well to keep an eye on him.

A rumour has gained ground ’, in Camp that the Camp Sergeant-Major may shortly be turning out for the H.Q. side and already a frantic search is being made by opposing teams for a really fast bowler. , . ' >

The Camp Commandant, Lt.-Col. F. K. Turnbull, D. 5.0., M.C., has kindly promised a trophy for the winning Unit at the end of the season, but although we have had the pleasure of many visits from him in our huts, up to the present he has not favoured us at any of the cricket matches. > J

One of the most, sporting and interesting finishes seen on the Camp ground was witnessed on the concluding day’s play between the Camp Fire Brigade, ,H.. Mess and P.O. v. Motor Transport and Mechanics which resulted in an outright win for the Combined side by 10 wickets and 31 runs. The M.T. and M. added the chance of a sporting finish' by declaring at 102 for 9 wickets leaving, the Combined side half and. hour to get 49 for an outright win. The two opening batsmen set about the job in no uncertain manner running, for almost anything and sending any loose balls to the boundary; they not only got the 49 but actually scored 81 in the half hour. Smith, who scored 106 not out last week in the unfinished match against the Dental and Medical, scored 53 and Sanders, our only P.O. representative, scored 27 both undefeated at the end. One must congratulate the M.T.M. for giving the Combined side a chance for a real sporting finish — it was cricket at its best. ; ' - .
