"WASSAIL"

The word ' wassail' is derived from the Saxon ' wass haile,' which means ' I pledge you,' or ' To your health.' We associate the wassail bowl with the Christmas festivities of years ago, although it has good-naturedly consented to act its part in present-day celebrations. It was filled with wine or malt, and roasted apples floated on the top. The bowl was introduced to the company with the inspiring cry of ' wassail!' three times repeated, and immediately answered by a song from the chaplain. This .' flowing bowl was indispensable on New Year's Day and in the festivities of Twelfth Night.
