Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Gisborne.— Thomas W. Wooldridge is charged on warrant with theft, on the 2nd instant, of 75., the money of J. Craig, baker, Gisborne. Description : A native of England, carter, about forty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, whiskers turning grey trimmed to a point, very good address, fond of drink. He collected the above amount and failed to account for it. Other charges pending.

Wanganui. —Jabez William Mace Luxford reports that on the 11th or 12th instant his store was broken into, and the following stolen : About £1 in cash, and two pairs of medium light Balmoral boots, “ Staples & Co., Wellington,” branded on sole, size 8 or 9 ; total value, about £2.

Wanganui. —Mary Ann Gibbin reports that on the 16th instant her store was broken into, and the following stolen : Two £1 notes, about £3 in silver, and about £1 in coppers, a crossed cheque for £2 3s. 7d. on the Bank of New Zealand, Napier, drawn by G. Fenwick in favour of Mary Ann Gibbin.

Suspicion attached to two ’men who said they were brothers and gave their names as Smith and that they were from Sydney. Description: First—About twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7in. or Sin. high, medium build, blue eyes, sharp features, red face, clean-shaved, prominent nose; dressed in dark suit, high collar, soft cream-coloured shirt. Second—About twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, thickset, square features, large eyes, pale complexion, clean-shaved ; dressed in dark suit. One of them was wearing a gold-mounted ribbon chain. Identifiable.

Otaki. —-Walter Alexander Milne, Postmaster and storekeeper, reports that on the 6th or 7th instant his store at Manukau was broken into, and the following stolen : Two tennis-shirts ; a men’s tweed sac coat ; a pair of men’s strong watertight boots with nails; a gentlemen’s left-foot light walking-shoe, size 9 ; a men’s dark-tweed sac coat, size 3; two boys’ brown-and-blue tweed trousers and coats, size 4 ; three metal watches, one black; a gentlemen’s gold-washed ring, imitation diamond in claw setting; a box of Old Judge cigarettes ; some Derby tobacco; about 10s. in silver and coppers : total value, about £l6.

Carterton. —William White Mansfield, draper, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 9th instant, a plush rug, 3 ft. lOin. by 4 ft. 10in., one side black, the other side tiger-skin pattern, bound at edges with red tape; value, 16s. 6d. Identifiable.

Greytown North. —Charles Kempton’s bicycle stolen : It has been ascertained that the bicycle is a Taylor’s Columbia, No. 13151.

Christchurch.— Alfred Hosking Duneen is charged on warrant with theft, about the 20th ultimo, of a bicycle, value £22 (recovered), the property of Best and Towne. Description : About thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion, fair moustache only; dressed in grey suit and grey cap. He obtained the bicycle on the hire system, and pawned it at Dunedin.

Addington (Christchurch). —William Henry Butcher, carpenter, reports stolen from his clothes-line, on the 11th or 12th instant, one unbleached and four twill sheets, seams down the centre of two of the latter ; one unbleached tablecloth, four large Turkish towels, three tea-towels, two whitecambric aprons, one white apron with red stripe round the bottom, five calico pillow-slips, one cambric pinafore, one white overall with red spots, two pairs of children’s pinkflannelette drawers, one white-flannelette chemise and a pair of drawers, a cream tennis-shirt, a galatea shirt, and half a dozen handkerchiefs ; value, £3. identifiable.

Timaru. — Charles Nicholson Macintosh is charged on warrant with theft, on or about the 9th October, 1901, of £72 Bs. lid., the money of John Venning, Atlas Mills, Timaru. Description: Colonial, land-broker and general commission agent, about thirty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair curly hair turning grey, bald on top, grey or blue eyes, rather full face, small mouth, small pointed chin, slight fair moustache only, slightly bow - legged, walks with a slight stoop ; a plausible manner ; usually dresses in grey tweed and soft-felt hat ; was Mayor of Timaru two years ago. Will probably attempt to leave the colony. Other charges pending, amongst them probably a charge of forgery.

Timaru. — William Burton (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with theft, on the 24th ultimo, of a gun, value £8 (recovered), the property of Messrs. Priest and Holdgate, ironmongers. Description: Supposed colonial, appeared well educated, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in. high, slight build, fair complexion, inclined to be sandy ; dressed in light-tweed suit and light-brown Dr. Jim hat. He hired the gun for the day and sold it to a second-hand dealer for £1 17s. 6d.

Dunedin. —Stanley Mead, seaman, reports stolen from his cahin on board the ship “Port Sonachan,” on the 27th ultimo, a gentlemen’s silver open-faced English lever watch, small hole in glass, a metal chain with small silver heart and a ten-cent piece attached ; value, £4. Identifiable.

Invercargill.— Harry Hill (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with theft, on or about the 14th ultimo, of a bicycle, value £ls (recovered), the property of William Black, law-clerk. Description: Supposed colonial, labourer or bushman, about thirty years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark eyes, very dark hair, small moustache only, cheeks slightly sunken; dressed in dark-tweed sac suit, coat rather long and cut

square at bottom, dark soft-felt hat worn on back of head showing fringe of hair on forehead ; had a small swag rolled in brownish white quilt, a red-and-.\hite scarf as a sling; supposed to be an expert axeman from Tasmania, and may seek employment bushfelling. Was lasi heard of at Gore, on the 15th ultimo, and may come to the North Island seeking employment.
