Horse and Cattle Stealing.

Waiuku.— Hugh Evans, farmer, reports stolen from his paddock as Awhitu, on the 30th or 31st ultimo, two longwool crossbred wethers, branded HE (conjoined) in black, tips off right ears ; value £l. Identifiable.

Te Kuiti. —Norman Leslie Gurr, insurance agent, Wellington, reports stolen from a paddock at Waiteti, between the 3rd and sth instant, a bay mare, seven years old, about 14 hands 1 in. high, dark points, white blaze down nose, white hind feet, scar on near side of rump, one of lower front teeth inclined inwards; a light bay mare, seven years old, about 14 hands lin. high, white on nose, two dents on each side of neck resembling bullet-wounds : value, £7 each. Identifiable.

Mokau. James Howard, charged with theft of a horse the property of Charles Henry Wood, has been arrested by Constable H. Beattie, Waitara police, and remanded.

Opunake. —Michael Horgan, farmer, Oeo, reports stolen from the stable of the Oeo Hotel, on the 4th instant, a bay pony hack mare, about 14 hands 2 in. high, aged, no brands, white marks round both eyes resembling spectacles, white on nose; also stolen, a saddle and bridle, saddle very heavy and strong, bridle has double straps on cheek, throat-strap broken and tied with string ; value, £l4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred T. H. Skelton, alias James Wilson. Description : About sixteen years of age, slight build, dark hair and oomplexion. He is supposed to have ridden the horse away towards New Plymouth, and when last seen was dressed in navy-blue serge suit, soft brown-felt hat, and had a small swag containing a pair of moleskin trousers, two shirts, a pair of socks, and a serge cap belonging to the suit.

Raetihi. —Gilbert Rorison, settler, reports supposed stolen, on the Ist or 2nd ultimo, a dark-bay haok mare, tliree years old, about 14 hands high, large white star on forehead, two white hind fetlocks, large scar on off shoulder, shod all round, no brands ; value £6. Identifiable.

Kimbolton. —Theft of Frederick J. Butement’s horse, saddle, and bridle : The suspect, Fitz Spelman, has been arrested for this offence by Constable F. J. Healey, Kimbolton police. Horse, saddle, and bridle recovered.

Masterton. —Thomas Tankersley and Michael Savage report stolen from the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Company’s stable, on the Bth instant, a light-chestnut mare, aged, 14 hands 2 in. high, white star on forehead, light patch of grey on near rump, no brands, the property of T. Tankersley ; value, £ls. A grey gelding, 15J hands high, dappled grey on hind legs, no brands, the property of M. Savage ; value, £l6. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to two youths, names unknown. Descriptions—First: About eighteen years of age, about 5 ft. 4 in. high, stout build, dark complexion and hair, slight dark moustache; dressed in

dark sac suit and dark skull-cap. Second : About seventeen years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, slight build, brown hair and complexion, round features, rather talkative; dressed in dark sac suit and dark skull-cap. The suspects stopped at the Dreverton Hotel, and were riding horses resembling those stolen. They took a new saddle, the property of the licensee, and left an old one that was on one of the stolen horses. The horse stolen from Michael Savage was recovered on the 13th instant by the Bketahuna police at Marongorongo, where the above suspects, who gave the names of Norman Aiken and Alfred Westlake, sold the horse and a saddle and bridle to James Aldridge for £5. He also bought from them a chestnut horse, branded H, for £l.

St. Albans. —Thomas Mummery, farmer, reports supposed stolen from a paddock in Kelly’s Road, about the 30th November last, a light-draught brown mare, aged, 16 hands high, white streak down the forehead, off hind fetlock white, and a white spot on shoulder, no brands; value, £25. Identifiable.
