Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Auckland.— Frederick Huxtable is charged on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for three months, in default of paying £5 10s. arrears due to the 3rd September, 1901, for the maintenance of his wife. Description : Supposed colonial, canvassing agent, forty-six years of age, 5 ft. Gin. high, blue eyes, bronzed complexion, dark-brown hair whiskers and moustache, medium build ; dressed in light-coloured grey-tweed suit and black hard-felt hat.

Auckland. —Joseph Allan Clark, charged with disobeying an order of Court, has been arrested by Constable J. S. Reid, Auckland police, and lodged in Mount Eden Gaol.

New Plymouth. Percival Skelton is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description: Colonial, a cooper, twentyone years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, dark hair and eyes, small black moustache, generally well dressed ; was employed at the Waitara Freezing-works. Complainant, Ella Mortenson, Waitara.

Lower Hutt. —James Brown, charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, has been arrested by Constable T. S. C. Kemp, Nelson police, and ordered to pay 7s. a week.

Manners Street (Wellington).— John Callaghan is charged on warrant with deserting his unborn illegitimate child. Description : A native of New Zealand, twenty-three

years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in. high, medium build, dark hair, grey eyes, clean-shaved except dark moustache ; dressed in dark sac-suit and brown alpine hat, sometimes wears a large check cap. His people reside at Eltham, and he left there on the 12th ultimo.

Christchurch. — Charles Baker is charged on warrant with deserting his wife ;Ella Baker since the 23rd ultimo. Description: A native of New Zealand, labourer, twentysix years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark-brown hair, clean-shaved, scar on left side of neck, fond of drink; dressed in grevtweed sac-suit, brown tweed cap, and tan boots. His parents reside at Helensville.

Christchurch. — John Francis Lord is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child. Description : A native of New Zealand, grocer’s traveller, twenty-one years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, black straight hair, dark-brown eyes, clean-shaved, one front tooth out; is usually dressed in cycling or black sac-suit, with black hard-felt hat, wears a black silk watch-chain with gold medal, with bicycle engraved on it attached. He left by the s.s. “ Talune ” on the 12th October last for Sydney. Complainant, Christina Luxton, Christchurch.

Christchurch. — Theodore Harewood is charged on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Gaol for one month for disobeying an order of Court to pay 2s. 6d. a week towards the support of his mother. Description : A native of New Zealand, quarter-caste Maori, a farm labourer and ploughman, twenty-two years of age, 5 ft. s£in. high, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, dark moustache only; medium build, broad shoulders; dressed in dark coat and vest, dark bell-bottomed trousers, black soft-felt hat. (See Police Gazette, 1896, page 188 as Harwood.) The sum of £1 2s. 6d. was in arrears on the 29th October, 1901.

Christchurch.— Charles Cockroft, charged with wifedesertion, has been arrested by Constable W. Worsley, Christchurch police, and remanded.

Christchurch. —Archibald Blue, charged with deserting his children, has been arrested by Detectives T. Boddam and J. Cassells, Wellington police, and remanded to Christohurch.

Dunedin. — Edward Mulvey Me Ewan is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Margaret McEwan, since the 25th October last. Description: A native of Scotland, a labourer, fifty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout build, broad shoulders, very black hair, clean shaved, except black moustache turning grey ; fresh complexion, round full face ; wears a set of false teeth. He was seen in Dunedin on the 25th October last.

Invercargill. — John Thomas Leckie is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Esther Leckie. Description : A native of New Zealand, a butcher, thirty-four years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, florid complexion, full brown eyes, very dark-brown curly hair, brown moustache only, large teeth, short neck ; fond of drink, and quarrelsome when drinking ; dressed in dark-blue vicuna suit and grey Dr. Jim hat. He deserted his wife about five months ago, and is supposed to have gone to Melbourne, where he is said to have a brother, James Leckie, a bookmaker.
