Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Auckland. —Frederick Porter, carpenter, reports stolen from his workshop, No. 95, Wellington Street, between the 29th and 31st ultimo, a new Distou rip-saw, a Diston crosscut hand-saw with carved handle, a shipbuilder’s heavy platesaw, and an old panel-saw; value, £1 7s.

Newton (Auckland). —Charles B. Fox, draper, reports that between the 27th and 29th ultimo, his shop was broken into and the following stolen: Three silver-mounted silk umbrellas, five gentlemen’s umbrellas, six men’s dark woollen shirts, four dark-blue serge shirts, four white tennisshirts, three fancy-striped cashmere shirts, nine white shirts, six Charley’s Aunt shirts, six men’s flannelette shirts, a black cape-waterproof, check lining; two fawn doublebreasted and single-breasted sac-waterproofs, three pairs of tweed pants, three pairs fancy braces with rollers, two black-and-white check caps, six elastic belts, thirty-six fancy ties and bows, twelve men’s white kid gloves, twentyfour biack and blue cashmere sox, and three pairs men’s woollen sox : value, about £35. Umbrellas identifiable.

Hikurangi. —Alice Hyland, storekeeper, reports stolen from a shed at the back of her bakehouse, on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, a gentlemen’s saddle, large knee-pads, worn on top of pads from carrying baker's basket, nickel irons; a single-rein bridle, snaffle-bit, large buckles; value, £3 3s. Identifiable.

Whitianga. —Michael O’Connor, Gumtown, reports that on the Ist or 2nd instant his store was broken into and the following stolen : Two £1 notes, a sovereign, £1 13s. 9d. iu silver and coppers, three old-age pension certificates, and two butts of cheque-books ; total value, £4 16s. 6d.

Hamilton.— John Livingston, farmer, reports stolen from ashed at Terapa, between the 31st ultimo and 4th instant, a gentlemen’s hunting-saddle, about 7 lb. weight; rusty steel stirrups, a blue web girth, and a red-white-and-blue striped surcingle: value, £3 15s. Identifiable.

Napier. Horace Nightengale, Selwyn Road, reports stolen from a dressing-room at the Theatre Royal, on the 2nd or 3rd instant, an open-faced watch with oxidized cases, “H. Nightengale” engraved on case; a silver chain with plain and twisted link alternately ; a maltese cross with “R. J. N.” engraved on it attached: value, 15s. Identifiable.

Taihape. Alexander McDonald is charged on warrant with the theft, on or about the 18th ultimo, of a cash - book, a day - book, and a ledger, the property of Willie Somerville Baird, storekeeper, Mangaonoho; value, £SO. Offender is about twenty-nine years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, medium build ; fair complexion and hair, clean-shaved except moustache, large mouth, bad, discoloured teeth ; takes drugs for face-ache, partly bald on top of head ; dressed in grey or dark suit, and straw hat. He was m partnership with complainant at Taihape. The business was sold, and the books were appropriated by the offender. He is said to have passed through Ohingaiti on the 14th ultimo. Foxton. —Edward alias Michael Morgan, charged with theft of overcoat, the property of Rota, has been arrested by Constable J. Forster, Foxton police, and case dismissed.

Inglewood.— Richard F. Langman, farmer, reports stolen from the lobby of the Parish Hall, on the 22nd ultimo, a blue cavalry-cloak lined with red, a piece torn out at the bottom on the right side, a tar stain on the left side at the bottom ; value, £3.

Hawera.— Edwin J. Archibald charged with theft from the Hawera Co-operative Dairy Company, has been arrested by Constables W. H. Ryan and C. Bleasel, Stratford police, on information supplied by Sergeant Bernard, Hawera.

Petone. —Theft of Frances Hammington’s portmanteau and contents. The stolen property has been recovered by Constable M. Cox, Petone Police. Suspicion attached to Charles Howard, alias Bourns, &c., arrested for other thefts at Wellington, and sentenced to twelve months hard labour. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 169.)

Wellington.— Edgar Gustav March, alias Marcks, &c., is oharged on warrant with the theft from the Athletic Park dressing-rooms, on the 3rd instant, of a Gladstone-bag, containing a pair of blue-ribbed cloth trousers, “ McLeod ” on buttons; a grey-tweed vest, a singlet, a pair of sox, a white linen shirt, and a collar, size 16, “J. M. Clark ” on them ; an open-faced gold-plated Waterbury watoh, a 9-carat gold curb albert, and a bunch of seven keys—the property of John Munro Clark, book-keeper: value £9 10s. Identifiable. Offender is a native of England, a cook and baker, thirtythree years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high ; fresh complexion, lightbrown curly hair, grey eyes (see Police Gazette, 1901, page 57; and Prisoners discharged from Wellington Gaol on the 3rd instant). The bag was sold by the offender at Kinder’s second-hand shop, Manners Street, Wellington.

Wellington.— James Cosgrove, Sergeant Waipawa Rifles, reports stolen from the Clyde Quay School-room, on the 21st June last, a Martini-Enfield rifle, No. 2339, J. Cosgrove stamped on foresight-protector; a bugle, no mouthpiece; a piece of music (oornet solo), a swag, consisting of a grey and a white bla> k-t, a rug, two towels, a water-bottle, enamelled mug and plate, and a knife, fork, and spoon : value, £9 10s. Complainant was quartered in the school during the Royal visit.

Wellington. —George Denton, ironmonger, reports stolen from his shop, on the 27th ultimo, a Smith and Wesson, blued, 320- calibre, self-extracting revolver, 3$ in. barrel, No. 222666; value, £3 18s.

Wellington. —Alexander Cederman, foreman, reports stolen from Arnold’s basket-factory, Willis-street, on the 3rd instant, a silver open-faced lever watch, No. 216095, “ H. W. Lloyd ”on dial; value, £4. Identifiable.

Wellington South. —Charles Orr, carpenter, reports stolen from the yard of his dwelling, Harper-street, on the 28th or 29th ultimo, a thirty and a forty gallon copper boiler, second-hand; “30 gallons” and “40 gallons” stamped on rim respectively; value, £3 10s. Identifiable. Bottle-gatherers suspected.

Christchurch. —William Ostill Pavitt, clerk, reports stolen from the inclosure in front of the Free Public Library, Cambridge Terraco, on the 24th ultimo, a gentlemen’s new Hudson bicycle, Brooks saddle, No. 326 at bottom of frame, and No. 49587 on the pillar under the seat, dropped handles, black mud-guards, 26 in. black frame, roller chain, 91 gear, rat-trap pedals ; six months in use ; value, £22. Identifiable.

Christchurch.— Frederick Withers, carpenter, Grafton Street, reports stolen from a shed in the Public Gardens, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, a kit of carpenter’s tools, consisting of a brace and a set of bits, a sash-plane, a smoothingplane, a compass, saw, a set-saw, two gouges, two squares, a bevel, a rule, a nail bag, a hammer, four punches, and a brass plumb-bob and line, all branded “F. Withers ”; value, £3 ss. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —Frederick Lloyd, builder, reports stolen from Gloucester Street, gu the 24th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Hartford American bicycle, No. 5334, black enamelled 22 in. frame, block chain, wood handle-bars, both grips missing, wool rim on front wheel, steel rim on back wheel, solid saddle, kerosene lamp attached ; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Christchurch. — The bicycle stolen from Edward W. Pidgeon has been recovered from George Barnes. It was sold to him by John Mavr.e, of Blenheim, who purchased it from a man, name unknown, about May last.

Dunedin. —But'erworth Brothers report stolen from a case on the s.s. “ Upolu,” in transit from Dunedin to Wellington, between the 12th and 22nd April last, forty-eight yards Maltese lace, ten pairs of cashmere gloves, and eighteen yards of black-velvet ribbon ; value, £4 7s. sd.

Dunedin. — Walter Loring is charged on warrant with the theft, on or about the 22nd ultimo, of £lO, the money of his employer, Charles Macandrew Howison, merchant, Crawford Street, Dunedin. Description : A clerk, twentytwo years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, strong build, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, small fair moustache only, sunken inflamed eyes; usually dressed in dark sac suit and hard blaok hat. Offender reoeived £lO on behalf of Mr. Howison, and failed to account for it. Other charges pending.

Dunedin. —Theft of Walter Alexander Scott’s bicycles. W. Sinclair and J. T. Brown, charged on warrant with these offences, are identical. Offender left Wellington with the Fourth Contingent for South Africa.

South Dunedin. Joseph Clatk, boot - manufacturer, Main Street, reports that on the 26th or 27th ultimo his shop was broken into and a black tin cash-box, 5 in. by 10 in., stolen, containing a sovereign, two half - sovereigns, and £2 14s. lOd. in silver. Cash-box only identifiable.

Palmerston.— Robert Matheson, farmer, Green Valley, reports stolen from his trap, in the yard of the North Western Hotel, on the 20th ultimo, a brown-leather portmanteau containing clothing, value £4. The clothing was found concealed underneath the wool-shed at Mount Royal, and may have been stolen by some of the men employed there. Portmanteau is still missing.

Little River. —Between 7.45 p.m., the 31st ultimo, and 7.50 a.m., Ist instant, the Little River Railway-station was broken into, the safe blown open with an explosive, and the following stolen: £SO 15s. o|d., consisting of about forty £1 notes and the remainder in gold, silver, and copper ; £1 15s. sd. worth of postage-due stamps, value from Id. to 6d. each ; £25 6s. 5Jd. of revenue stamps, value from t|d. to Is. each, a ss. and a 3s. stamp being amongst them; a cheque for £3 10s. (recovered), a small cash-box, a yellow oilskin stained at the back, collar-button, one on each side, missing. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown , who were seen at Kaituna on the 31st, going towards Little River. Descriptions: First—About twenty-four years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, clean-shaved, good-looking, dressed in dark clothes and dark-brown soft hat. Second—About thirty years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. higb, clean-shaved, dark moustache, good appearance ; dressed in dark clothes and soft brown hat, a muffler round his neck, and carried a small parcel over his shoulder. Both identifiable. They got away on the lineman’s trolly, and disconnected the tele-graph-wires before leaving.
