Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland.— Joseph Williams, labourer, Hobson Street, reports stolen from the passage of his dwelling, on the 3rd or 4th ultimo, a nearly-new black mackintosh coat, the second button from top loose ; value, £1 ss. Identifiable.

Auckland.— George Rice and Samuel Farrell report stolen from their bedroom, in the Sailors’ Home, on the Bth June last, a blue diagonal double-breasted coat, makers’ name “ Woollams and Company ” on inside, the property of George Rice ; value 10s. A white soft shirt and a pair of blue pilot “ Naval Reserve ” trousers, the property of Samuel Farrell ; value Bs. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Bill, a native of Germany, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, strong, stout build, fair complexion ; dressed in shabby clothes; will probably be employed in some of the sailing vessels.

Newmarket (Auckland). —Edward Edwards, baker, Sussex Street, reports that about 2 a.m., 27th ultimo, he was assaulted by three men on the Kyber Pass Road and robbed of a florin, a shilling, a white pocket-handkerchief, and a brown felt hat; total value, Bs. 6d. Hat only identifiable. One of the men, who was clean-shaved except moustache, and had a soft felt hat, searched bis pockets, while the other two held his arms from behind. None of them identifiable.

Mount Roskill Road (Auckland). —Henrietta Wright reports that, on the 29th ultimo, her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A lady’s gold ring set with a diamond and two rubies, a revolver and cartridges, and seven sovereigns; total value, £ll ss.

Mount Roskill Road (Auckland). —Edmund George Sandall reports that on the 30th ultimo his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen : A gentleman’s new dark-brown tweed sac suit, size 5 ; a white silk handkerchief, a grey Dr. Jim hat, size 6£; a black worsted coat, cut square in front; a 55.-piece, and an open-faced nickel-silver keyless watch, number unknown, with metal chain attached; value, £3 14s. 6d. Identifiable.

Ngaruawahia. —Abraham Ngahiwi, watch and gum stolen. Frances Joseph Mellars has been arrested for this offence by Constable J. Cavanagb, Ngaruawahia police, and remanded. The gum only has been recovered.

Waikaremoana. —George Steele, labourer, reports stolen from his tent, between the 10th and 17th ultimo, a silver open-faced keyless Waltham, No. 6833133, main-spring broken, a rolled-gold ring, anchor on it, a pair of scissors (one handle had been broken and soldered), and a yellow silk handkerchief with flowers; value, £4 19s. 6d. Suspicion attached to Maoris who passed through en route to Ruatahuna, near Te Whaiti.

Napier. Charles Frederick Lowman, boots, Central Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 3rd or 4th ultimo, a horse-shoe pattern scarf-pin, with very small paste diamonds in imitation of nails, and a pair of half - worn tan boots, “ C.F.L.” written in ink inside, size 5; value, £2 Bs. 6d. Identifiable.

Wanganui. — William Mander’s dwelling broken into. The gentlemen’s gold albert chain with pendant, the ladies’ gold watch and safety-pin brooch, and a gentlemen’s gold ring have been recovered in possession of Francis Heywood alias Holloway, &c., who was arrested by Constable P. Duddy, at Wanganui, for breaking and entering, and sentenced to two years’ hard labour, and has been remanded to the Supreme Court, Christohurch, for sentence on the former charge.

Upper Hutt. Harry Carter is now charged on warrant with the theft of the watch and chain stolen from George King at Kaitoke. The chain and pendant were sold on the 17th ultimo at Kinder’s second-hand shop, Manners Street, Wellington.

Mount Cook (Wellington).— Walter Frederick Bragg, traveller, reports that on the 4th instant his dwelling, No. 122 Taranaki Street, was broken into, and the following stolen : A gentlemen’s well-worn gold chain, fetter-link pattern, two or three drop-links ; value, £3. Also an insurance policy, No. 1546478, for his child, Henry Frederick Bragg, in the City Life Insurance Office.

Wellington. —Alfred Fraser, Town Clerk, Foxton, reports stolen from his bedroom, in the City Buffet Hotel, on the 15th ultimo, a navy-blue vicuna sac coat and vest (have been dyed), a pair of dark slate-coloured tweed trousers ; value, £2 10s. Identifiable.

Wellington. —John Griffiths, jewellery stolen. There was also stolen a gentlemen’s 18-carat gold open-faced lever watch, No. 11162, maker “ Leaders, London.” It has since been ascertained that the silver hunting lever watch, No. 23496, has not been stolen.

Thorndon (Wellington). —Harry Dunbar reports stolen from his bedroom, in the Thistle Inn Hotel, on the 16th ultimo, a brown bamboo walking-stick, with Japanese carving; has a silver band with “ H. Dunbar ” engraved thereon ; value, 15s. Identifiable.

Thorndon (Wellington). —John Creighton, No. 6, Tinakori Road, reports that about 2 p.m., 29th ultimo, his dwel ling was broken into and a blank cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Aro Branch, signed “ Martha Creighton ” and “J. Creighton,” stolen. A small man, dressed in dark clothes, wearing a brown Dr. Jim hat, was seen by Mrs. Finn prizing open the back window. Identification doubtful. The cheque is an old one, their account having been closed about four years ago. The house was ransacked and jewellery exposed, but nothing has been missed except the cheque.

Clyde Quay (Wellington).— Johanna Chapman, No. 6, Tennyson Street, reports supposed stolen from her bedroom, about the 7th June last, a lady’s gold ring set with five or six sapphires ; value, £5. Identifiable.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Arthur Edward King, reports stolen from the passage of Mrs Burgess’s boardinghouse, No. 230, Willis Street, a gentleman’s black mackintosh, the lining of one pocket torn ; “ Anthony Hordern and Sons, Haymarket, Sydney,” on the tab; value, £1 10s. Identifiable.

Christchurch, —John H. Stone, farmer, reports that about 5.30 p.m., 24th June last, in Colombo Street, a silver hunting lever watoh, No. 1117, and a rolled-gold chain were snatched from him by a man, name unknown, about thirtyfive years of age, clean-shaved, and about 5 ft. 8 in. high. A doubtful case.

Woolston. —Matthew Gimblett, gardener, reports stolen from his dwelling, St. John’s Road, on the 28th ultimo, a small lemon-coloured old wooden box, with look and key, containing two Jubilee sovereigns and an old 55.-piece. Identifiable, except sovereigns.

Geraldine. —Theft of jewellery from Norman H. MoFarlane. The suspeot William Buchanan has been arrested for this offence by Detective J. Cooney and Constables D. Connolly and W. Hill, Dunedin police, and committed for trial. Property recovered.

Temuka. —Catherine Falconer, Arowhenua Hotel, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 19th ultimo, a gold-bar brooch, “L.F.” on it; a flat gold ring, set with two rubies and four pearls ; and a gold ring set with a diamond ; value, £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man and woman who stayed in the hotel up to the 20th ultimo, and went under the name of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, which may be fictitious. Descriptions: First —Supposed English, olerk, about 5 ft. 10 in. high, about forty-fiive years of age, slight build, very small hands, thick grey hair, beard whiskers and moustache turning grey ; black horn ring on little left finger ; dressed in check mackintosh overcoat and blue cap. Second— Supposed native of New Zealand, about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. 1 in. high ; dark complexion, dark hair and eyes ; front teeth missing; girlish appearance ; dressed in black, and black sailor-hat and blue oorduroy jacket; had a child with her about four months old.

Ophir. —Mary Gavan reports stolen from her room in the Shamrock Hotel, about the 18th ultimo, a ladies’ gold Waltham lever watch, No. 8102485, ! ‘ M.G.” engraved on front case ; is out of repair; value, £7 10s. Suspicion attached to Thomas Kane, alias Kiely. Description: A native of Ireland, a labourer or spieler, twenty-nine years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. hieh ; fresh complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes.
