Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.
Auckland. —The Auckland Tramway Company reports stolen from their office, on the 17tli instant, an old red-leather purse, three compartments, containing a half-sovereign, and 3s. in silver ; an old dark-green crocodile-leather purse, containing a £1 note, Bs. in silver, and a ladies’ gold engagement-ring, set with three small diamonds: value, £5 ss.
/ (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 138.) Pukekohe. —Albert Dorricott’s saddle and bridle have been found. Not stolen as reported.
Waihi.—Henry Berridge, carrier, reports stolen from his stable, between the 11th and 18th instant, a colonial saddle, large size, newly lined, odd set of nickel-silver stirrups, one having three bars and the other two, top of knee-pad has been recently sewn; value, £3.
Paeroa.—The Railway Department reports stolen, about the 9th April, 1898, a tent, 8 ft. by 10 ft., much worn, maker Le Roy; value, 10s. Suspicion attached to Thomas O’Donnell, alias “ Tommy the Horse.” Description : Irish, forty years of age, a navvy or labourer, 5 ft. 5 in. high, thickset, strong appearance, dark complexion, dark beard and moustache ; dressed in blue tweed or serge suit, hard black hat. Suspect was employed on the Paeroa-Thames railway-works, and left for Auckland on the above date.
Gisborne.-—Clara Louisa Millar, Customhouse Street, reports stolen from off a clothes-line on the 10th or 11th instant, four ladies’ chemises, new, marked “ E. Millar ” and “ A. R. Millar ” ; a pink flannelette night-dress ; and a pair of pyjamas : value, £1 7s.
Mastebton.— James Budd, labourer, Akura, reports stolen from a paddock, between the 20th and 22nd instant, a new single-purchase Trewhella jack ; value, £3 7s. 6d.
Wellington.—Frank Grady, jeweller, Willis Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the 12th instant, a ladies’ gold halfhoop diamond ring, 18-carat, hall-marked, set with five stones, claw setting; value, £3O. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown, one about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache trimmed short; the other about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fair hair, shaved except moustache; both dressed in dark clothes.
Wellington.—Jacob Semeloff, pawnbroker, Cuba Street, reports that on the 24th instant his shop was broken into and the following stolen: Six gold brooches ; a brooch, heart in centre; six silver chains, ladies’ and gentlemen’s; a ladies’ 15-carat gold chain, with pendant stone in centre; a 15-carat single gold curb-chain; a gentlemen’s 9-carat gold chain, no bar or swivel; a ladies’ long silver-gilt chain ; a gold cross, a 9-carat wedding-ring ; a gentlemen’s plain signet-ring ; a wed-ding-riug and keeper combined; a buckle ring, diamond in centre; a ladies’ gold dress-ring, with pearls in row ; four plain gold band-rings, 15- and 18-carat; an extra large gold wedding-ring; a gentlemen’s gold ring, with three large opals in centre; a gold buckle-ring, diamond in centre; a gold band-ring, 15-carat, star and diamonds in centre ; a 9-carat gold plain band-ring; a gentlemen’s ring, garnet in centre; three wedding-rings; a ladies’ ring; six engraved keepers; two 9-carat gold band-rings ; a gentlemen’s ring; two ladies’ band-rings ; a puzzle-ring , a ladies’ dress-ring, two blue stones with a diamond in the centre; a ladies’ two-band dress-ring; a gentlemen’s diamond-and-sapphire ring, with twelve stones, diamonds around sapphire; a ladies’ 18-carat gold huntingwatch, with engraved centre; a gentlemen’s gold Geneva hunting-watch, a gentlemen’s 18-carat gold keyless huntingwatch : total value, £IOO.
Westpoet.—George Gastin, hawker, reports stolen from his shop, on the 19th instant, a new imitation-gold hunting-watch, “ America, Philadelphia, U.5.A.,” on inside of case, value £5 ; and a fancy chain of the same material, value £llos.
“ Wanaka,” s.s. (Lyttelton).—Stolen from the forecastle, on the 16th instant, a brown-tweed overcoat, size 5, brown buttons, red lining, torn in several places ; and a brown-tweed sac-coat, size 5, well Worn; value, 10s. each ; the property of Alfred Condell, greaser: also a small American Bee clock, glass broken, red marks on face; value, 65.; the property of John McKennick, fireman. Firemen on the s.s. “ lonic ” suspected. •
Hampden.—Charles Watterrens, fisherman, Moeraki, reports stolen from outside his hut during the night of the 11th instant, a new yellow oilskin coat, double calico, dark-tweed collar, black buttons, one inside-pocket ; value 12s. Suspicion
attached to a sailor known as “ Bismark,” who had been fishing in the neighbourhood. Description : A German, about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face, long chin, speaks mutteringly. He may attempt to reach Lyttelton for the purpose of shipping on a vessel.
Timabu.—William Charles Furby, carpenter, Church Street, reports stolen from off a clothes-line, on the 13th or 14th instant, two wdiite shirts (15 in. collar), a white table-cloth, and a white-linen sheet, narrow 7 hem at ends; value, 15s.
Dunedin. —Park, Reynolds, and Co., auctioneers, Manse Street, report stolen from their sale-room, about the 10th instant, six table-knives and six forks, ivory handles; a fish slice and fork, ivory handles ; and a small electro-plated cruet with two cut-glass bottles ; value, £4. Identification doubtful.

Alexandra South.—Peter Sutherland’s Gladstone bag contained the following articles : viz., a blue-grey blanket with red stripes, a grey-checked sac-coat, a large straw 7 hat w 7 ith leather band ; a pair nailed blucher boots, heel-and-toe plates ; a flat 6 in. tar-brush, two tins of soft-soap, four fathoms of wdiite manila line, several shirts, a pair of blue overall trousers, a brown dungaree jacket, a dark-tw 7 eed cap, and sundry letters and telegrams : value, £7.
