Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

J (See Police Gazette, 1898, page 137.) Auckland. George Massey Watson’s watch and chain have been found. Not stolen.

Port Albert.—Jacob Stevenson, gum-digger, Way by, reports that on the Bth instant his whare was broken into, and two sacks, containing 2cwt. of kauri-gum, value £B, stolen. Some of the pieces identifiable.

Napier. John William Cook, manager, New Zealand Clothing-factory, reports that on the night of the 16th instant his dwelling in Clyde Road was broken into, and the following stolen : A gentlemen’s plain gold ring with diamond set deep in centre ; a plain gold bar brooch, 1} in. long by fin. wide, knob at each end, and letters “ L.C, ” in centre ; a gold bar brooch, I:) in. long by | in. wide, pearl set in centre with chasing round it; a gold brooch, arrow and horse-shoe pattern; a common fiddle brooch, with mother-of-pearl front, and three or four gilt strings ; a ladies’ open-faced gold Geneva watch, maker “ C. Mathey,” No. 34497 ; and a long-linked chain, about 10 in. in length, with tassel at end: value, £23 2s. 6d.

Napier.—William Parnell, publican, reports stolen from his hotel, White Road, between the 13th and 17th instant, a brown Inverness waterproof overcoat, with cape, red-and-black check lining, chain and clasp fastening at neck ; and a black Inverness waterproof overcoat with cape, red lining, torn at one arm-hole, much worn, and has a tear (sewn up) at bottom in front; value, £3 10s.

Wellington.—John Fuller Woodward, carter, Alma Lane, reports that on the Ist instant his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen: A greenstone brooch, safety-pin pattern, gold-mounted ; a gold Maltese cross with five pearls, a gold scarf-pin with twisted knob on top, a ladies’ gold dressring set with rubies (one missing) ; a gold oval-shaped locket, with photographs of complainant and his wife inside ; a bracelet

of bloodstones, silver-mounted, and fastened with a heart; a gold neck-stud, a gold wedding-ring (broken), a silver medal with eagle engraved on it, two silver pencil-holders; a George IY. shilling, 1818 ; and £1 lls. in silver and coppers : value, in all, £9 Bs.

Wellington.—W. B. Allen, builder, 122, Adelaide Road, reports stolen from the Ranfurly Hotel, on the 6th instant, a blue mackintosh coat with cape, red tartan lining, cape has arm-straps inside, nearly new; value, £2 10s.

Wellington.—Edward James Rose reports stolen from the Waverley Boardinghouse, Lambton Quay, between the 9tli and 11th instant, a waterproof overcoat, fawn colour, shot with green, four pockets with large flaps, white-metal chain at back of collar, second top button missing, made by Harmer and Co., Norwich, England ; value, £3 3s.

Christchurch. —James Hardinge, labourer, Montreal Street, Sydenham, reports that on the 4th instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A gold dress-ring, “ E.A.” engraved thereon; a gold dress-ring, set with three diamonds and ten pearls, ivy-leaf design ; a gold bar brooch, set with five pearls and a ruby, forming a half-moon and star ; a gold brooch with two hearts, surrounded by a wreath of leaves; and a silver thimble in a red case : value, in all, £9.

J (See Police Gazette, 1897, page 68.) Christchurch. Theft of Frederick Truscott’s gun: Thomas George Earl hat been arrested by Constables Cassells and Cox for this offence, and committed for trial. Gun recovered.

Christchurch. —James Taylor and Peter Thompson, bootmanufacturers, 227, Hereford Street, report that on the 9th or 10th instant their dwelling was broken into and the following stolen: Nine £1 notes on the Bank of Australasia ; twentyseven £1 notes, Bank of New Zealand and Bank of New South Wales ; fifteen sovereigns, and 13s. 6d. in silver.

Waimate. —George Manchester, jun., farmer, Redcliff, reports that between the broken into, and a fire, pistol stock,!- value /Apt, Aoleirrhercfrom. Suspicion attached to a wasf seen near the complainant’s house on the Ilium slant, and was observed the following day going towards Sandhurst or Kurow, carrying a gun. Description : About forty-five years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, dark beard whiskers and moustache, walks as if weak on one leg, and lias a small black-and-white terrier-dog with him.

Gore. Walter Campbell, labourer, Waikaka Siding, reports stolen from his hut, on the 16th or 17th instant, three £1 notes, two cheques on the Bank of Australasia —one for £1 13s. drawn by W. E. Tait, the other for £4 drawn by Edward Smith, No. C over 2, 20459; both in favour of complainant —and ss. in silver. Suspicion attached to a swagger, who was seen leaving the hut. Description : Thirty-seven years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, pale complexion, slightly lame, brown hair beard and whiskers trimmed short; dressed in a darktweed coat and vest, moleskin trousers, and black slouch hat; sometimes carries the swag on his head. Payment of cheques stopped. Case doubtful.
