Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Hamilton (Waikato). —Frederick Hunt reports stolen, on the 26th ultimo, a light-brown mare (hack), aged, about 14 hands high, branded HP (conjoined) on off shoulder, white streak across nose, near hind foot white ; value, £6. Suspicion attached to a boy named Joseph Johnson, who went to Auckland, and is supposed to have sold it on the way. Description : About thirteen years of age, dark hair, dressed in a brown sac-coat, dirty dark-tweed trousers, and small black skull-cap, barefooted, ragged appearance.

Kihikihi. —Tuhatau, charged on warrant with stealing Nathaniel Harvey’s gelding (recovered), has been arrested by Constable L. Carroll, Kihikihi police, and remanded. Bail allowed.

New Plymouth. —Arthur Kirkby, insurance agent, reports stolen, between the 29th ultimo and Ist instant, a chestnut cob gelding, about 15 hands high, mane clipped, tail cut short and square, shod all round, branded like RH or RN on one shoulder; value, £lO.

Eketahuna. —Jacob Benjamin, storekeeper, reports stolen from the roadside, near Hawera,, on the 3rd or 4th instant, a dapple-grey mare, hack breed, about eight years old, 14J hands high, very long mane, newly-shod, no brands, value £7; a mouse-coloured gelding, medium hack, ten years old, 14£ hands high, newly-shod on front feet, no brands, value £6 ; and two pairs of iron hobbles, value 10s.

Christchurch. —Stealing Charles Horwell’s horse, saddle, and bridle: Charles Cant lias been arrested for this offence by Detective W. Maddern, and committed for trial. The horse was traced to his possession and recovered. Saddle and bridle also recovered, but the evidence is not strong enough to prosecute him for stealing them.

Christchurch. —Stealing William George Hillier’s mare (recovered): The man who sold this animal, and gave his name as W. Andrews, is supposed to be identical with Charles Cant, now awaiting trial on two charges of horse-stealing.
