Death. Second-class Sergeant Joseph Barrett, No. 27
Rewards. Constable E. Mackay, Auckland Police, has been awarded £5 from the Reward Fund, and record of merit, in recognition of his intrepid conduct in jumping into the harbour and saving a hoy, named Joseph Barber, from drowning. (92/621.)
Constable J. Burrows, Invercargill Police, has been awarded 9s. by the Customs Department for detection of a breach of “ The Beer Duty Act, 1880,” at One-tree Hill. (92/628.)
Sergeant J. Cullen, Napier Police, has been awarded £8 for arresting Alfred Milford, a deserter from H.M.S. “ Ringarooma.” (92/564.)
Constable W. Ramsay, Ashburton Police, has been awarded £5 from the Reward Fund for praiseworthy energy displayed in following up and arresting Arthur F. Stuart, alias Fisher, &c., an escaped prisoner. (92/653.)
Sergeant J. O’Malley and Constables C. Bleasel, T. J. McCormick, T. Breen, G. Fitzgerald, and C. Moore have been awarded £1 each for placing refractory firemen on board the s.s. “ Ruahine.” (92/673.)
Re Larrikinism. (Circular Memo. No. 10/92.) With reference to Circular Memo. 3/92 of the 18tli ultimo (vide Police Gazette, 1892, page 41) relative to steps to be taken for suppressing larrikinism, and as it has been found that the nuisance still exists to a considerable extent in some districts, it is notified, for general information and guidance, that any non-connnissioned officer or constable who fails to effectually grapple with this class of offence will be at once removed to another station. The Commissioner hopes that this warning will stimulate all members of the force to use their utmost exertions to at once stamp out this growing evil. By order. A. Hume, Commissioner of Police.
