Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

A man, name unknown, is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 11th April last, at Timaru, of a chestnut hack-gelding, 15 hands high, about seven years old, supposed branded L on one shoulder, hog mane, and long tail, known by the name of “ Red Robin,” and has been raced by Hobbs Brothers and Coulter at Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, and Dunedin, value £ls; an English - made saddle, about half-worn, “ Clissold ” branded on flap, value £4 ; a double-rein bridle, value £1 55.; and a brown-mixture waterproof coat, value £1; the property of John Shaw. Identifiable. Description: Supposed "English, about twenty-three years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, lightbrown hair side whiskers and moustache ; dressed in darktweed suit and hard black-felt hat; smart active appearance. Identifiable. He hired the horse, &c., from Mr. Shaw on the 11th April last to go to Temuka, and was to return on the 14th April last, but he did not do so. A man answering the offender’s description, who gave his name as George Ross, sold the horse, saddle, and bridle, through Mr. IT. Connell, auctioneer, at Oamaru, on the 13th April.

A man, name unknown, is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench with stealing, on the 18th April last, from a paddock near Rakaia, a dark-brown hack-gelding,

seven years old, 15 hands high, branded A on near shoulder, near hind fetlock white, since recovered; the property of Thomas Lamont. Description : Supposed a native of the colony, about twenty-one or twenty-two years of age, about sft. Bin. high, medium build, dark hair, small dark side whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark-tweed coat, greytweed trousers and vest, and hard black hat. Identification doubtful. He sold the horse at Christchurch on the 20th April last, and when giving a receipt for the purchase-money signed his name James Spencer.

Stolen about the 25th December last, from Table Lands, Martinborough, a bay mare, hack-breed, six years old, about 15 hands high, a white ring round near eye, branded 5 on near side of neck under mane ; the property of Edward Holt; value £B. Identifiable. A man, name unknown, was seen riding the mare at the Lower Hutt in the early part of last month.

Supposed stealing a mare at Wairoa, the property of Henry Melville Brown : On the 23rd April last a man, name unknown, was seen riding a mare at Moeangiangi answering the description of the one stolen. He was in company with two brothers, named Ammundsen, Scandinavians, belonging to Ormondville. They may have with them the saddle and bridle stolen at Wairoa, described in Police Gazette, 18S9, page 95, the property of Arthur Poyzers.

The gelding, the property of Emmerson Bowes, stolen from Sockburn, Canterbury, has been found in the possession of Joseph Earnshaw, who has been arrested for the offence by Constable James Sheary, Blenheim Police. Offender has been committed for trial on a charge of larceny.

James Calvary is charged, on warrant issued by the Featherston Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on or about the Ist ultimo, at Masterton, of a black mare, hack-breed, blaze on face, two or three fetlocks white, branded T on off shoulder, goes a little lame on one of fore feet, value £3 10s. ; and an old saddle and bridle, value 10s.; the property of John Beel. Identifiable. Description: A native of British Guiana, South America, of Spanish and negro extraction, copper complexion, a sailor and cook, forty-five years of age, sft. sJin. high, medium build, black woolly hair, black eyes, scanty dark beard and moustache, cross, compass, and MB tattooed on left forearm ; when last seen wore dark clothes ; can speak nearly every European language. He was seen in Masterton on the sth March last. He was employed as cook at Prosser’s Hotel, Porirua, in September last. Mr. Beel lent the offender the mare, saddle, and bridle at Featherston, on the Bth February last, to go to Masterton, on condition that he returned them on the following day, but he has not since done so.

Supposed stolen on the 24th ultimo, from Mr. Smiley's stables, Wanganui, the bay gelding race-horse “ Sir Garnet,” aged, about 16 hands high, star on forehead, one of hind fetlocks white, had on racing-plates, no visible brands ; the property of Daniel Thurston ; value £75. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from a paddock at Menzies Ferry, Southland District, a draught bay colt, eighteen months old, about 15J hands high, star on forehead, one of hind fetlocks white, unbroken and unbranded ; the property of Mary Anne Jones ; value £lO. Identifiable.

The horse, the property of Thomas Godfrey Hammond, stolen from Patea, has been recovered by Acting Sergeant William Manning, Palmerston North Police, and traced to the possession of William Baird, alias William Baird Drummond, alias William Henry Drummond, who was arrested at Palmerston North on the 16th ultimo for larceny, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Stolen on the night of the 19th ultimo, from Pukekohe, Auckland District, a creamy-white cow in milk, a white two-year-old heifer, a two-year-old heifer, white, except red neck and strawberry legs, and a red heifer with white tip on tail, eighteen months old, all unbranded ; the property of William Morrow ; value £l2. Identifiable. Also a red-and-wlrite cow branded (M) on first rib of off flank, hair of tail cut short, shell off one horn, near calving ; and a roan cow with long cocked horns, unbranded ; the property of William Adams ;

Also a small white strawberry cow with cocked horns, unbranded, two yellow-roan coloured heifers in good condition, and a heifer with white belly and white spots on face ; the heifers are two years old and are in calf; the property of James Fulton ; value £l2. Identifiable. The cattle were running together, and it is supposed were driven across the Waikato River to the Maori country by European settlers.

Supposed stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, from a paddock at Mount Stewart, near Milton, a black mare, eight years old, 15 hands high, blaze down face, near eye nearly blind from injury, branded Mon off neck, value £l6; had on a nearly-new duclc-canvas cover, value 10s. ; the property of Michael McAlphine. Horse identifiable.
