Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 118.) John Robert McGill, charged with deserting his wife and four children at Lake Wanaka, is a native of the North Island.

Thomas Albert Firkin is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife and family at South Dunedin since the 4th ultimo. Description: A native of Birmingham, twenty-nine years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, medium build, rather fair complexion, small light-brown eyes, thin features, dark-brown hair, no hair on face except a little fair hair on chin ; wore blue-cloth coat, black trousers and vest, heavy grey overcoat, hard black-felt hat, and heavy lace-up boots.

Christopher Fagan i 3 charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with deserting his wife at Timaru since the 23rd May last. Description: Irish, a labourer, thirty years of age, 6 feet high, medium build, slightly stooped, pale complexion, rather long nose, brown hair, fair sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wore dark-tweed coat and vest, and brown-moleskin trousers. He is well known in Christchurch, where he was formerly employed by the City Council, and in railway-yards as a platelayer.

William Dixon is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife and two children at Christchurch since the 16th May last. Description : A native of London, a cook and baker, fifty-two years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, grey beard, whiskers, and moustache, blind of one eye. Ee was lately employed as cook and baker for men employed at a threshing machine in the Geraldine District. His wife and children are at present supported by the Charitable Aid Board.

Edward Rule is charged on warrant of commitment, issued by the Christchurch Bench, in default of paying £1 Bs. costs, incurred when summoned by his wife for a breach of the Destitute Persons Relief Act, at Christchurch, on the 22nd June last Description: A native of Adelaide, a gasfitter, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, dark eyes, fair hair, no hair on face except small beard on chin, small scar on right cheek ; wore black suit, long brown overcoat, and hard black-felt hat. Mrs. Chapman, who keeps an hotel at Hamilton, Waikato, is his mother.

William Penpold, charged on warrant with disobeying an order to provide for the support of his wife, left the Bluff on the 12th ultimo by steamer for Christchurch, supposed with the intention of going to Sydney. About fifteen months ago he was employed driving a cab in Christchurch.

William Donnelly is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with deserting his wife at Auckland since the 30tli June last. Description : Irish, a labourer, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, black hair tinged with grey, dark-brown beard, whiskers, and moustache, anchor tattooed on one hand ; wore blue-cloth coat, greytweed ti’ousers, and soft black-felt hat.

Georgs William Price is charged, ou warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with disobeying an order to pay £1 per week towards the support of his wife and seven children. Description : English, a bottler and waiter, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, thin features, dark complexion, small dark beard and moustache; fond of drink. On the 27th ultimo he was £7 in arrear.

Edward Crosswellek, charged on warrant with deserting his wife at Wellington, has been arrested by Constable John Drew, Waitara Police, and ordered to pay £2 at once, and 10s. per week after, towards the support of his wife.

Edward Grainger is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with deserting his wife at Auckland since the 23rd June last. Description: English, a railway-labourer and gumdigger, forty-five years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high,

stout build, fair hair, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, pockpitted. Supposed to have gone to the Kaipara Gum Fields.

John Murdock is charged, on warrant issued by the Hamilton Bench, with refusing to provide for the support of his illegitimate child, by Emily Johnson, at Cambridge. Description : A native of Belfast, a carpenter, twenty-five years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, fair sandy whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, rather good-looking and well built; when last seen wore dark-tweed suit and hard black-felt bat. Ho left the Waikato District about three months ago, supposed with the intention of going to Levuka, Fiji.

Charles Bright is charged on warrant of commitment, issued by the Cambridge Bench, to one months’ labour in Mount Eden Gaol, in default of paying £l fine and £1 9s. costs, for having assaulted Stephen Finlay, at Cambridge, on the 26th ultimo. Description : Supposed English, twenty-two years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, smooth face, small fair moustache and imperial; wore dark-tweed suit, long darkbrown overcoat, and soft-felt hat.
