WYNDHAM RACING CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

The Wyndham R.C.’s meeting on New Year’s Day was successful from every point of view, and the outing was greatly enjoyed by an exceptionally large gathering of visitors, some of whom came from as far away as Christchurch. The Wyndham Cup> furnished a good race, but nothing had a chance at the finish with Rorke’s Drift, the son of Calibre and O’Rorke’s Fancy winning with something in hand from Palisade, who is evidently developing staying ability, as the race was run in 2min. 9 2-ssec. The field was not a very high-class one, but that good mare Hesione was among the beaten division, close up to the placed horses. The winner was only in receipt of 71b. from Hesione and 21b. from Palisade. Following on his

success with Mr. Price’s 610-guinea purchase in the Cup, trainer P. T. Hogan scored in the Minichan Hack Handicap with another son of Calibre in Hardshot, who cost 220gns., both horses referred to being sold at Mr. J. C. N. Grigg’s recent dispersal sale in Invercargill. The Visitors’ Hack Race went to Deltonio (Delaware —Lady Melton), owned and trained by M. Hobbs, of Riccarton, and another Christchurch horse in Meltchikoff (son of Menschikoff) won the New Year Handicap, one mile. The two Canterbury horses are half-bro-thers, the latter being trained for “Mr. C. Machell” by W. McDonald. The open sprint event of the fixture, President’s Handicap, resulted in Cortes (Vasco —lima), a half-brother to Obsono and Lord Burnside, beating the Southland horse Buller by half a length, over six furlongs, but an advantage of 281 b. in weight and the fact that the Canrobert gelding was probably short of a gallop assisted in this direction. The ' Wyndham winner Cortes, who has been trained at Wingatui for some time past for Mr. H. Friedlander, of Ashburton, has been joined at C.J.C. headquarters by two other horses owned by the Canterbury sportsman. The animals in question are Ardenvhor (Martian —Mary of Argyle) and Moidant (Martian —Lady Lochiel).
