NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES AT ROSEBERY PARK.
The New Zealand filly Briseis, by Achilles —Celaeno, gave proof of her excellence at the recent Rosebery Park meeting by the manner in which she won the Rosebery Maiden Handicap (says a Sydney writer). Briseis was always a short-priced fa\ ourite, notwithstanding she was opposed by 15 others. But she never left the issue in doubt, as she won all the way. Though only a neck separated her from Lady Yuel at the finish, the New Zealand filly could have done much better had it been necessary. But while Briseis did so well for the Dominion, her countrywoman, Margarita, did even better. Carrying 9st. 131 b. in the Fourteen-two Handicap the pony carved out six furlongs in the remarkably good time of lmin. 14 sec. Margarita, by the way, is engaged in the Carrington Stakes with exactly 3st. less than she won with, and if the Rosebery racecourse is the correct length, then it looks like a case of “shut the gate” for her .n the . Carrington Stakes.
