BOWLING.

(By

"The Skip.”)

Bowlers were fortunate in having another glorious day on Saturday last, but the h gh breeze E.owing somewhat interfered w.th the course of the bowl and made it somewhat difficult to draw a shot with accuracy.

In this sissue we publish a photo, of Mr. John W. James, president of Mount Albert Bowling Club. Mr. James is well known to Auck anders, and was a few years back one of its most successful builders. On retiring from business, Mr. James made his home at Mount Albert, and has been a strong supporter of the local club. He is quite an enthusiast at the game of bowls, and is one of the most good-natured and jocular skips t is possible to meet.

The general topic on the bowling greens just now is, Are you going to Wellington ? orj Has the Rotorua tourney of next month (February 28) secured your patronage? The latter tr pis certainly more attractive from a scenic point of view, and to those who have not yet seen this wonderland ot thermal activity it is sure -1t» prove a fasc nat-mg draw against that of Wellington.

Entries for the rink match at Rotorua Tourney (prizes, four gold medals), close on February 26 with the secretary, and in the case of Auck and competitors may be handed to Mr. G. F. Br mblecombe, the Rotorua Club’s town representative, at any time prior to the time mentioned. Entries for the pairs match will close during the tournament. Players are rei nded that fours may be composed of members of different clubs outs’de the Auckland province, but in case of clubs in the provinc al district of Auckland ,j layers constituting a team must all be members of the same club. Pa rs must be composed of members of the same club. The club officials for the present season are as follows:—Patron, Mr. W. •[. Herries, M.H.R.; president, Mr. D. Gardner; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. L. .Jones and W. Seeley; committee, Messrs. T. E. Pearson, C. E. Kusabs, R. C. White, F. P. Hoyes, J. Baldy, J. W. Wrigley, and W. McFarlane.

Auckland Cub are sending the following e’ght to compete for the Northern Bowling Association flag and shield at Wellington Tournament: Dngle, Craig, Lyons, Handcock (skip), and James, Thornes, Carlaw, Ledingham (sk : p). This is considered a very strong combination, and a few lines re the players will not be considered out of place.

Dingle: A first-class drawing man. Has represented his club in many positions for years past. Toured Great

■retain with the New Zealand bowlers a few years back. Won the Crystal Palace fixed jack competition aga’nst allcomers.

Craig: A young player. Has a good > now’edge of the finer points of the game. Skipped the first-year players for his club. Places well and can “ lift” a shot when required.

Lyons: A left-hand player. Can draw and dr ve well. Thoroughly acquainted with all points of the game.

Handcock: A solid player. Never gets excited. Knows all points of the -me. Very deadly with the “ running shot.”

James: A tip-top leader. Has won the champ ion c hp of h s club, also championhip singles against champion of champions. Can play in any position.

Thornes: A steady drawing man; seldom falls short of the jack. Plays the •'yard gone shot” with judgment.

Carlaw: A veteran as far as tournaments are concerned. Thoroughly acouainted with a’l points of the game. Has been in winning teams for his club n all positions. Can skip if needed. Draws and drives well.

Ledingham: The same remarks as regards Carlaw apply to Ledingham. He is a solid determined player, and is never beaten unf ‘1 the ’art Lowl ’s played. Very deadly on an open jack.

Pr’.estley (Mount Eden) is showing very good form, and skipped a four against Brimblecombe wth marked success. The scores were 20 to 12.

A game of more than ordinary merit was n'ayed between the following teams: —Gill. Myers, Es”m. Hooper (skip), 22, v. Noton, Dacre, Tutt, Robins (skin), 23. The ’ending was fa ; r, G'll having the advantage. Both the seconds played sound

Lewis. The thirds placed well, and were answerable for some very .clean-drawn shots, whle the skips were kept constantly busy wresting the shot or playing tii’m bowb into some dangerous-looking wood. The game was an exciting and well-contested one from start to finish.

A team from Remuera Club played a friendly game (31 heads) on Auckland green on January 1. The teams and scores were:—Dingle, Easton, James, .Ledingham (Auckland), 36, beat Lennox, Stephenson, Gamble, Clerk (Remuera), 21.

Kissel and Ross made a big recovery in the Mount Eden Club Pairs against Walton and C. C. Baker. At the 13th head the latter pair led by 21 to 11, but by real hard play Kissell and Ross scored 19 points while their opponents added but 7, thus winning the game by 30 to 28.

Watkins, quite a young player, still shows to advantage on the Mount Eden rinks. Dbwn?ng is another beginner who can draw a shot with most of them on the lead. iv:

Bob Jackson has taken to bowls and joined the Carlton Club. Bob has made a name for himself by playing a first-rate game in a fours for the club’s chai enge ■ z tickles.

The Auckland Club members had the pleasure of playing on the large green, which has recently been re aid and improved in every way. ‘ The time, labour, and money has been wed expended.” This is the verdict of all who have had the pleasure to play a bowl over its rinks. Mr. Handcock (green superintendent) and a.l those who had the respons b lity of the work on band, are to be complimented on the results of their efforts.

Two rinks from Ponsonby were playing at Auckland on Saturday last, the rinks being skipped by Messrs. Ledingham and Handcock (Auckland) and Messrs. Osmond and Quin (Ponsonby). The games were very evenly contested throughout, and some clean and clever play d splayed / both sides. The following were the teams: —

Easton, Choyce, Carlaw, Ledingham (Auckland), 19, beat Buchanan, Court, Neil, Osmond (Ponsonby), 15. Dingle, Craig, Lyons, Handcock (Auckland), 16, beat Arey, Jones. Ifwerson, Quin (Ponsonby), 15.' The following eight will represent Rocky Nook at the Northern Bowling Association Tournament to be held in Wellington:—Wakerley, Ellisden, Fletcher Bouskill (skip); Dutton, B. A. Kayes, Rathbone, Cutler (skp). Emergency, J. McLeod. Congratulations were meted out to Jack G'arlick on skipping his team home in the Mount Albert champ on fours. Although Jack is a most consistent player, I hear this is the first time he has annexed a trophy of this kind. * * « * During the week the following trophy compet tions were played on the different bowling greens: — CARLTON.
