LAWN TENNIS.

(By

“The Judge.”)

Some really good practice has resulted on ail the club lawns during the splendid holiday weather, and the result should show individual improvement in many players. **7 * . • Sport ng interest has been centred round the doings of the Auck anders who visited Wellington for the Association’s •annual meeting. Miss P. Gorrie worked her way to the semi-final, when she was defeated by M’ss Powdrell. Nearly all the other competitors fe 1 at the “ first fence,” Dr. Bamford only succeeding in winning his match; but the second fence proved his downfall.

Mss A. Stewart succumbed to Miss Ward. The latter went right through to sem'-final, where she met Miss Nunneley.

In the Men’s Championship Doubles H. A. Parker and R. Swanston (Wellington) beat Dickie and Wallace (Trial aki), €—o, 14—12, 6—l. The score points to a hard struggle by the Taranaki paii in the second set, but the first *rid th'rd sets tell a tale. In this event neither of the Auckland pairs survived their first match, but W. A. Brown and Dr. Bamford scored a set against aishley and Wilson.

In the Ladies’ Champ onsh'p Doubles Mrs. Holmes and Miss Jackson, after defeating the Misses Stewart (Auckland), •also won against the Misses Gorrie, two sets to one.

The Auckland championships close on January 4 with the secretary or any member of the Match Comm ; ttee.

The death is reported by cab’e from San Francisco of Mr, Arthur Brabant, of Auckland. He .was formerly a member of the West End Club, and one time won the Auckland championshp. He was undoubtedly a very fine flayer, although just lacking the necessary brilliancy to make him a real champion.
