CANTERBURY. Tutanekei-Southern horses in the North Island—Christchurch bookmakers and backers—Tips for Tinwald—The horse fiend again. Chkistchukch, December 28. A report has reached here that Tutanekei broke his leg at Nelson last week and had been shot. Things are very quiet at Riccarton just now, most of the horses being in other parts of the colony. Marino and Quiltiri have so far not been very successful in the North Island. When they do win backers will get a good return for their investments. Very few people m Christchurch backed Antares for the Auckland Cup, St. Paul, Waiuku, and Daystar being popular picks. Eton was well backed for the Trial Handicap, and of course backers plumped heavily on Conqueror, but needless to say they were disappointed at receiving such a small return for their outlay. The bookmakers came out best over the Auckland races, but they dropped heavily over the Westport meeting, for backers succeeded in picking every winner at the coast meeting. Uniform is considered here to be the pick of the Wellington Cup handicap, and remains favorite at 3 to 1. Starshot is lame and will not race again for some time. The Tinwald Bacing Club’s meeting takes place on New Year’s Day, when the following may win —New Year’s Gift: Alcestis or General Wolfe. Tinwald Cup : Cannonshot or Bangefinder. Flying : Paladin or Lord Stanbury. Welter: General Wolfe or Belligerent. Pony : Dot. I have frequently notified your readers of the dastardly way horses have met their death during the past year. On Xmas eve a valuable hackney stallion (Zulu), the property of Mr F. M. Buckley was found stabbed to death at his owner’s place, Papanui. The horse was stabbed in the middle of the forehead. A reward of £lOO is still on offer to anyone who will give information for the detection of the perpetrator.
