October 29. Tennis Opening. What with the show, races, theatre, and sundry small dances, this last week has been a gala one, and the elements, on the whole, have proved kind. The town has been thronged with visitors m various walks of life, from -the “squatter” of the backbloeks down to the “organ grinder” of the street comer. The Haiti Tennis Club were fortunate in having a beautiful afternoon for the opening of their courts on Saturday last, and a very good attendance of both members and friends were present, amongst whom I noticed: The President of the Club, Mr. T. A. Coleman and Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Penn, Mre. Crawford, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Stock, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Stephenson, Mrs. R. Barker, Mre. Kirk. Mrs. Palairit, Mrs F. Barker, Mrs. Maude, Mrs. Murray (Hastings), the Misses Agnew-Brown, McCredie. de Lautour. Barker, Murray, Coleman. Robson, Davies, Coplin (Hawera), Crawford, Bright, Doughty (Wellington), Mrs. Traill and Mts. Carmichael. A delicious afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Murray and Mrs Barlow, the tables of which were tastefully decorated with roses from Mr. Grant’s garden. The Vita Bros. Orchestra played at intervals during the afternoon, and a very pleasant time was spent by everyone present. A Small Dance.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the annual show took place. The weather vas showery on the first day, which prevented many people from going out to the grounds, but on Wednesday, “People’s Day,” bright sunshine prevailed, and a record attendance of over 7000 are said to have passed through the gates, the showers of the previous day having proved a blessing in disguise, for it laid the dust and made the grounds in perfect order. His Majesty’s Theatre has been packed to overflowing every night this week almost, when the Ward-Palotta Company have been playing. The plays have been, “A Bachelor’s Honeymoon,” “The Man from Mexico,” and “Mr. Hopkinson.” Mr. Ward and most of his talented Company are old favourites with Gisborne theatre-goers, and had a great reception on their reappearance here. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Strachan, Waimata, are in town for a few days, and are staying at the Masonic Hotel. Bishop Lenihan (of Auckland) is on a visit to Gisborne. Miss Caplen (Hawera) and Miss Reeves are staying with Mrs. H. Maude. Mrs. H. de Lautour is the guest of ■her mother, Mrs. Bayley. Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge are stayine with Mrs. Reynolds, “Sandowne.” Mr. and Mrs. S. Williamson went South by Wednesday’s boat. Mr. and Mrs. J. Murphy are in town for the week’s festivities. ELSA.
